NEXT MEETING – Saturday, February 15, 2025 between 10 AM and 2 pm at the Volunteer Park Conservatory Potting Shed
Please note that our February meeting will be held the third Saturday of February
At this time of the growing season we are busy collecting growing supplies, watering and fertilizing our plant stools to promote stock growth, taking cuttings, creating our 2025 mum growing plans and looking forward to a successful and abundant growing year.
If you need some inspiration developing your growing plan take a look at the main page of the ECA website – www.ecamumclub.org. There you will find a link to a list of most of the varietals grown by ECA club members.
We all have our favorites and those that are reliable producers however, I encourage you to try something new. When making your growing plan, don’t hesitate to ask for help. We have many experienced growers willing to assist.
We’ve been lucky so far this winter, but we still need to watch the weather and be mindful of freeze protection strategies – especially this cold snap happening the first week in February. Stools will probably survive one or two frosty days in a row, however a 3rd frost likely will kill the stool and any frost at all will kill the tender new growth on the stools. Protecting stools from rain (keeping the plants dry) promotes necessary semi-dormancy. When stools are wet there is a much higher risk of frost kill.
This is also the time of year to pay ECA annual membership dues. ECA single membership is $15 and Household membership is $20. Please send your membership check made out to Evergreen Chrysanthemum association c/o Erika Harris PO Box 66155 Burien, WA 98166
Our February15th monthly meeting is very hands on. We want all of our club members to know how to propagate mums from cuttings. So bring your labeled plant stools that have root stock to our meeting. You will learn to take cuttings and we will be propagating plants for our April public plant sale. If you have questions contact Sue Joyner at su[email protected]
Note: We’ll order pizza for lunch from Zeke’s.
Stay tunes for the new and improved ECA monthly newsletter. It should make it’s debut in the next few days via this email string. The cultural notes, January meeting minutes, important ECA dates, and reminders will be included.
Lastly, our monthly meetings area great venue to learn from our experienced growers. I encourage you to bring your questions and share your growing experiences!
Now, I’m off to do some skiing.
Looking forward to seeing you all at our cutting university on Saturday, February 15th at 10am
